Montreat, founded as a retreat center in the 1890s, has evolved into a conference center for the Presbyterian Church, featuring a college. The area's steep wooded trails, including the challenging Graybeard Trail, offer stunning views of the Black Mountains' Seven Sisters peaks. Popular in the fall for vibrant foliage, Graybeard Trail requires careful planning due to its length and strenuous sections, advising hikers to bring ample food and water and to ensure a timely return before dark.

Tip: Canine companions are invited, but it is required that they remain on a leash. Be sure to check out the Piney trail in the Montrat area as well.
