Going on vacation is always exciting, but it’s even better when you can bring your furry friend along for the adventure! No more puppy-dog eyes as you wave goodbye or stress over finding a reliable pet sitter.

Our pet-friendly vacation rentals allow you to enjoy a luxurious escape without leaving your pooch behind. But bringing an extra four-legged family member on your trip usually requires a little extra planning.

This guide covers everything you need to know about planning the ultimate pet-friendly getaway, from choosing a destination with plenty of trails and tail wags to finding pet-friendly activities.

What are the Benefits of Bringing Your Pet on Vacation?

If you’re a pet parent, you’ve probably faced the dilemma: bring your pet along or find a sitter. While some opt for boarding kennels or trusted friends, nothing beats having your furry companion by your side on vacation.

Here are some benefits of bringing your pet on your trip:

  • No dog-sitting arrangements: You won’t have to find a dog-sitter, pay for boarding kennels, or convince a friend to look after your pet.

  • No separation anxiety: No need to leave your pup crying in the kennels, wonder how they’re doing, and spend your trip missing them – you’ll both be making memories together.

  • Outdoor adventures together: Whether hiking scenic trails or running along sandy beaches, your pup will love exploring new territory and making memories by your side.

  • Comfortable pet-friendly properties: Wander’s spacious vacation homes offer plenty of room to roam, plus pet-welcoming perks like fenced yards and easy access to walking trails – much better than a cramped crate at home.

How to Plan a Pet-Friendly Vacation: Step-by-Step

To ensure your pet-friendly vacation is nothing short of paw-fect, planning ahead is essential.

Whilst your pup would have you believe that all they need is a big park and some bones to chew on, there’s much more to planning a pet-friendly trip than meets the eye.

Here’s how to plan a pet-friendly vacation in four simple steps:

1.Choose a Pet-Friendly Destination

Not all vacation spots are created equal when it comes to accommodating pets. The best destinations offer:

  • Plenty of pet-friendly restaurants and cafes

  • Walking trails, parks, and beaches where pets are welcome

  • Activities and attractions that allow pets

You also need to consider where the destination is and how you’ll travel there.

Generally, airlines allow pets. Small dogs can usually come into the cabin with you. However, larger breeds will have to travel in the cargo hold, which can be a stressful experience. As a result, driving is usually the best way to travel with pets. A destination within the country which you can drive to with plenty of restroom and walkie breaks along the way is ideal.

Need some inspiration? Here are a few of our favorite pet-friendly destinations:

Yucca Valley, California

Yucca Valley, California, is a pup’s paradise, complete with pet-friendly activities in Joshua Tree and hiking trails at Mission Creek Preserve and Desert Christ Park. Nearby, Boozehounds in Palm Springs is a stylish spot for happy hour drinks with your furry friend.

You’ll find plenty of pet-welcoming properties like Wander Joshua Tree, Wander Indian Canyon, Wander Palm Springs, or Wander Joshua Tree Sanctuary. Before heading home, grab a souvenir for your good boy or girl at Cold Nose Warm Heart Pet Store.

Austin, Texas

Austin, Texas, is a haven for pet lovers. It offers activities like paddleboarding on Lady Bird Lake and visits to MUTTS Canine Cantina, a dog park and restaurant combo. The city’s vibrant food scene features plenty of pet-friendly patios and a vibrant community of dog-loving locals. Book a pet-welcoming property like Wander Austin Falling Leaves, Wander Austin Oakhaven, or Wander Austin Oasis for a stylish and comfortable stay.

Bodega Bay, California

Bodega Bay is a scenic coastal escape perfect for pups, with pet-friendly beaches like Doran Regional Park Beach, Limantour Beach, and the Bodega Head Trail. Enjoy fresh seafood with your furry friend at dog-welcoming Bodega Bay Restaurants like Birds Cafe, Lucas Wharf, or Ginochio’s Kitchen, all offering outdoor patios.

For a luxurious stay, book a waterfront retreat at Wander Bodega Bay or Wander Bodega Shoals, where you and your pup can relax and cool off in style.

Lake Tahoe, California

Lake Tahoe offers year-round fun for pets and their owners, with scenic trails, dog-friendly beaches, and the lake itself. In winter, snow-loving pups will enjoy the frosty trails, then warm up at dog-welcoming eateries or your luxury rental, Wander Tahoe Slopes or Wander Incline Village, where you and your pooch can unwind in luxurious, pet-friendly comfort.

Yosemite National Park, California

Yosemite National Park offers breathtaking scenery and lots of dog-friendly hiking trails – your pooch won’t have seen anything like it! After a day of exploring, grab a meal at Around The Horn Brewing Company, Seven Tents Pavilion, or 1850, then enjoy a drink at Idle Hour Winery’s pet-welcoming patio. Wander Yosemite Falls is our upscale accommodation perfect for you and your four-legged adventurer.

2. Find a Pet-Friendly Vacation Rental

Choosing the right accommodation is key to a stress-free, pet-friendly vacation. Unlike hotels, Wander’s luxury vacation homes offer:

  • Plenty of space: Spacious living areas, fenced-in yards, and private outdoor spaces.

  • Pet-welcoming perks: Easy beach access, nearby trails, and cozy corners for your pup to snooze.

  • Luxury amenities: You don’t have to sacrifice your comfort in place of your poochs’ – enjoy pools, hot tubs, and concierge service while your pet enjoys the great outdoors.

Joshua Tree Vacation Rentals Pets

Here’s how to find a pet-friendly rental in a few simple steps:

  1. Use a trusted vacation rental site (like Wander) and search for properties in your chosen location.

  2. Tick the ‘pet-friendly’/‘pet-allowed’ filter and any other requirements you have for your stay.

  3. Check the house description and policy for any specific rules and requirements (e.g., ‘pet-friendly’ might be limited to dogs and cats, not your horse!).

  4. Check whether there are extra fees for bringing pets.

  5. Make sure the rental has enough space and suitable amenities. Also, check the location: a property next to a busy road or on a cliffside might not be best suited to a keen explorer.

  6. Contact the vacation rental company or host to confirm they’re happy for you to bring your pup, then go ahead and book!

Our luxury pet-friendly vacation rentals tick every box! Discover coastal retreats with direct beach access like Wander Secluded Dunes, perfect for morning walkies and curling up by the fireplace in the evening. Or check out Wander Big Sur Point for an escape to nature your pet will love, complete with premium amenities like a hot tub, dry sauna, and yoga room for you.

3. Pack the Essentials for Your Pet

Like you, your pet needs a travel kit to stay comfortable and safe on vacation. Once you’ve got your suitcase packed, make sure they’re sorted with these must-haves:

  • Food: We know this is obvious, but make sure to weigh or count your pet’s food to ensure you have enough for the whole trip and extra just in case. This is especially important if your pet is on a less flexible diet.

  • Bowls: Bring along a couple of bowls for food and water. Lightweight collapsable bowls are great for easy feeding and hydration during hikes or beach days.

  • Bed and blanket: Even if your rental provides these, bringing your pet’s familiar bed or blanket can make traveling more comfortable for them.

  • Travel documents: If you’re crossing state lines or flying, your pet might need some proof of ID. To be on the safe side, pack your pet’s vaccination records, health certificate, ID tags, microchip information, and any other documents.

  • Treats: Make sure to reward your good girl or boy for being on their best behavior, especially after long days in public places; they deserve it!

  • Poop bags: Bring plenty of poop bags and bring them everywhere you go, keeping the areas you explore clean is a must.

  • Toys: Long journeys, lazy afternoons, and beach days call for entertainment. Bring your pet’s favorite toys, like balls and chews, to keep them occupied and happy so you can have some downtime!

  • Grooming supplies: If your pet loves to get down and dirty, bring a towel, brush, dog shampoo, and whatever other supplies you usually use to clean them after a big day of paddling or mudbathing.

  • Crate: If your dog usually sleeps in a crate or if you know they’ll travel more comfortably in one, bring one with you.

A well-packed pet travel kit ensures your furry companion stays safe, comfortable, and happy throughout your getaway.

4. Plan Pet-Friendly Activities and Experiences

Your pet deserves just as good a time as you do on vacation, and we know you love them too much to leave them at your rental while you have all the fun!

With proper planning, they can join in on all kinds of adventures! From scenic hikes to dog-welcoming eateries, pet-friendly destinations mean you can have all sorts of experiences side by side.

Here are some ideas for things to do with your four-legged companion:

  • Go hiking: Hit the trails with your pup and enjoy some fresh air and exercise. Many scenic hiking spots welcome leashed dogs, offering both you and your pet a chance to stretch your legs and take in the views. Don’t forget to pack water and snacks for both of you!

  • Dine at pet-friendly restaurants: From casual cafés to upscale restaurants, you’d be surprised how many eateries offer dog-friendly seating and patios. Enjoy a leisurely meal while your pup relaxes by your side – some places even offer special doggy menus or treats. Puppucino? Yes please!

  • Visit pet-friendly bars and breweries: Sip on local craft beers or cocktails while your pooch lounges nearby. Many breweries and bars offer water bowls, dog treats, and pet-friendly seating, making it easy to include your furry companion in your night out.

  • Hit the beach: Let your pup enjoy the sand and sea at a dog-friendly beach. Whether they love chasing waves, swimming out, or simply lounging by your side, a beach day is a perfect way to soak up the sun.

  • Explore local pet stores: Treat your good boy or girl to a new toy, collar, or some meaty treats. Pet stores are a great place for a little retail therapy and a fun way to spoil your furry friend.

  • Try paddleboarding or kayaking: For water-loving dogs, paddleboarding or kayaking can be a fun and unique adventure. Many outdoor rental companies offer pet-friendly options, letting you and your pup enjoy the water together.

  • Visit a dog park: Let your pet run, play, and socialize at a local dog park. It’s an excellent way for them to burn off energy and make some new four-legged friends. You might even make a pal, too!

  • Have a picnic: Whether it’s in the park, on the beach, or atop a mountain, a picnic never loses its charm, especially when there are bones involved! Pack your basket and find somewhere scenic to graze with your pup.

Top Tips for Travelling with Your Pet

These four steps are the recipe for a pet-friendly vacation! With a great destination, vacation rental, activities, and a well-packed suitcase, you’ll be all set!

To make sure your trip is truly paw-fect, here are some extra tips:

  • Use pet-friendly directories to find the best spots: Directories like BringFido are a great way to discover pet-friendly bars, restaurants, events, and activities in the area you’re visiting. You’ll find recommendations and honest reviews from dog owners to ensure a great experience for both of you.

  • Get a vet check-up before you go: Before your trip, schedule a check-up with your vet to confirm that your pet is in good health and avoid any nasty surprises on the road. Ensure your dog is up-to-date with vaccinations and has the right parasite prevention for your destination.

  • Take a test drive: If your pet isn’t used to traveling or hasn’t been on a long journey before, build their confidence with short test drives. If they seem comfortable straight away, great! If not, keep taking them out (with lots of treats on hand) to get them used to the car.

  • Check and respect local rules: Leash laws and pet policies vary by destination. Some beaches and national parks ban dogs, some allow them on a leash, and some let them run free. Always follow the rules of the place you’re visiting to keep your pet safe and you on the right side of the law!

FAQs

Can I Leave My Pet Unattended in a Vacation Rental?

Most hotels don’t let you leave pets unattended. The benefit of a vacation rental is that you can leave your pet if you need to nip out to a shop or take an Uber. However, we wouldn’t advise leaving your pet unattended for more than a couple of hours, and if you do need to leave, make sure they’re safe in a crate or small room to avoid accidents or breakages.

Is it Better to Fly or Drive With a Dog?

Driving is generally better than flying. It offers more flexibility for walking and toilet breaks and is a much less stressful environment for pets. If you have a large dog, they’ll likely have to fly in the cargo hold, which can be stressful and potentially dangerous. Driving is usually the best choice for dogs that can’t fly carry-on.

How Much Does it Cost to Fly a Dog?

Flying with a dog can cost anywhere from $75 to $200+ per flight, depending on whether the dog travels in the cabin or cargo, the airline, and the dog's size. Check the rules for your specific flight for accurate information.
